Here we go again!
Since I last saw the consultant, my throat has become a problem again. I was snoring most nights and having a little trouble swallowing. Since we now have a spare room, which I'm converting into a craft room, I decided to buy a sofa bed for when the snoring got too bad.
I realised when I returned from Austria at the beginning of September that it was easier to sleep in the craft room. I wasn't worrying about waking my husband and we could both have a good nights sleep. Plus my voice was beginning to deteriorate.
I decided to see my GP to get a referral to an ENT consultant, but the only appointment I could get was mid October. She agreed with me that my throat needed looking at, as she said my voice sounded as though I had tonsillitis. It was beginning to be uncomfortable most of the time. My mouth felt awful when I woke up, as I was sleeping with it open all of the time. I thought I could feel the scar from the tonsil operation I had two years ago.
So, yesterday I went to see the ENT consultant privately. I picked a different one his time, although still at the same hospital. I was not impressed with my previous ccnsultant. Although he knew the moment he saw me that I had some type of cancer, his manner was appalling. After the biopsy he just said that I had cancer - that was it! Also, despite me asking for a follow up re my throat, I was never seen again!
However, this different consultant was lovely. He had a really kind manner and was very surprised at my lack of follow up and couldn't explain it at all. Once he looked in my throat he became very serious and things started moving quickly. The nurse left to arrange an urgent MRI scan and another one went to make another appointment, this time to see the original consultant.
It was explained to me that what was left of the tonsil had swollen and was cutting off my airflow. It was now a very urgent case.
So, I'm off for the MRI tomorrow and seeing the old consultant on Friday. I can see myself being whizzed back to hospital again for the rest of the tonsil to be removed. Unfortunately, I also think that I will, probably have to start treatment for the mantle cell lymphoma once this is sorted out. I've left a message for my cancer consultant, so that he's in the loop.
It's exactly two years since I was diagnosed, so I suppose I've done really well not to have had treatment yet. Other than my throat, I feel absolutely fine and I really couldn't be happier in my life. So, we'll see what happens next!
